Active Storage introduces single-controller XRAID "ES"

Active Storage today announced a single-controller XRAID ES version of their Apple-centric storage product. There's a handy comparison on Active's site. It's quite a bit cheaper than the dual-controller version. (Note they don't recommend the ES for Xsan use.)

This mirrors (excuse the pun) a similar move by Promise back in January.

I wonder if the 4TB ES model could be good for MD. A lot of us run into that old
situation of "wasting" a full raid on our MD storage pool. Especially now-a-
days where the trick is setting up 4 lun storage pools.

when they say not compatible with XSAN they mean its not what the product is for, and they wont support it if you have issues in post production workflows.

    slower disks and non active/active.
then again the xserve raid is non active/active and I think those units are great.
I think this is the perfect nearline solution. even in an XSAN. i know it is not xsan compatible but lets be honest a volume can contain lots of different pools with different tiers of storage.

Because the XRAID ES only comes with one RAID controller, you wouldn't want to
    use it for Xsan storage.

However, when the time comes to step up to Xsan, just pop in another XRAID
controller, and you're good to go. Note that the hard drives in the XRAID ES are
not as "enterprise" as the drives in the full-fledged XRAID.

Also note that the XRAID ES spares kit comes with an extra controller!
