Final Cut Server
Mac mini Server

Apple announced updates to their Mac mini line-up today, including a new server model for $999 that sheds the optical drive to cram in twin 2.5" 500GB HDDs and a proper nVidia 9400M GPU. Snow Leopard Server is included in the price. Cheap! Seems like an inexpensive way to get into Final Cut Server.

There are also new MacBooks, new iMacs with a range topping 27" 2560x1440 screen, a gesture mouse, and tweaks to the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme products.

Andy: 4GB of RAM is enough for a nice testing development FCSvr. :)

Pair it with that Promise SmartStor 4TB (well, 2.7TB) external storage device, and you're looking at a really useful system for $1800. I do wish, though, that the new mini had a second Ethernet port -- the ability to have it straddle two networks would make it a perfect replacement for several of my older systems.

I use the apple USB ethernet adapter on our exiting mini FTP servers.. they are light use (100MB) but work fine.. you could straddle a ton of networks :)

Is there any kind of Firewire800 to fiber adapter out there that would allow you to use a macmini on an xsan system? I'd like to upgrade my XSan system, but can't afford 2 new xserve servers. I'd like to use a macmini server as a backup controller for my xsan, but you have to have the fiber connected.

    Any ideas?
