BREAKING: ActiveSAN announces pricing...

In advance of NAB, Active Storage today announced ActiveSAN configurations and pricing.

I'll post more details here soon, once I get my kid off to school!

Update: Active has confirmed that the listed prices are for a PAIR of units. That's a much easier pill to swallow!

Active hasn't answered my one question to them: are those prices for one unit or a pair?

I feel I need to run some clarification on how this price is derived and how it is poised for the current Xsan configuration. Lets start with the current server setup - by the time you finished configuring your Xserve to be a great SAN MDC, you're up to about $7K each with added AppleCare Hardware Support. But note that the ActiveSAN includes THREE years of 24/7 hardware support. Total so far for server hardware: $14,000.

Next - lets talk about server software - sure, with Apple that was a straight $999 for each server, and add $499 for each for AppleCare that you have to rebuy each year, times three years is another $1500 for each server adds another $3000...

Total so far for server hardware and software: $18,000.

So - we want a modern, Stornext filesystem on there right?

Two seats of Stornext software for Linux is $3000 each or $6000 total, you have to add an HA License for failover functionality, who would build an Xsan without failover? Thats another $7500, add Support for HA for another $2700 adding another $16,200. Add Gold level support that can be as high as $600 per year for at least another $1200.

Total now is $35,400 - and we haven't even added client seats!

So in this new 'post-Xserve' world, its true that a great solution like ActiveSAN isn't cheap, but clearly you can see its priced competitively to all of the individual pieces together alone.

Anyone considering a 'screw, glue, roll your own server' should know that ActiveSAN comes from Active Storage, a company that deeply understands customer needs in high-performance SAN environments, and works with some of the worlds most-recognized media brands as customers and are ONLY going to deliver a superbly performing matched pair of systems that is precisely configured to each customers individual requirements. That's what the Active Storage name means.

Now consider that only ActiveSAN comes with ActiveStats, available this Fall with Innerpool technology and fully backed by Active Storage StorNext, Xsan and Mac OS X certified support 24/7.

I hope this helps clarify what ActiveSAN is. If anyone has any questions feel free to call us anytime, or if you are at NAB this week, stop by and say hi.

    Thanks,
