I didn't make it out this year, can someone look into the new Promise VTrak A-Class? VTrakFS? Does it work like XSAN or more like SanMP or a NAS or what?

It sounds pretty sweet, a total turnkey SAN w/ Directory Services. Does it also include a DNS server? Seems like that would also be a requirement for a true "turnkey" solution.

I was lucky enough to play with one for a couple of weeks. It didn't need any special DNS services. Performance was great, even in the single chassis model I had.

Interesting news from Promise, but what is actually VTrakFS under the hood? Quantum StorNext? I can't find any details on this.

Found an interesting knowledge base article about "Defragment algorithm for Vtrak A-CLass VTrakFS file system".

- Preallocation reserves blocks in advance which helps keep the file extent to a larger size.
- This technique primarily helps when file size is large. Only a small ratio of blocks will be wasted to minimize fragmentation.

Preserve Reservation Window for active files.
- Preserving the Reservation Window works differently when compared to the Preallocation technique.
- While perserving the Reservation Window, memory blocks are preallocated to prevent other files from allocating the same blocks to help minimize fragmentation.

Allocate by Goal.
- The File System will try to allocate adjacent blocks from layout. Also it will try to lookup adjacent free extents to allocate. This provides better result when trying to find new Reservation window./quote

Promise had adopted [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Whale_Clustered_file_system]Blue Whale FS/url, which has been used in a number of other storage solutions. I think they are investing in improving the solution, especially in the Mac client. They are on Xsanity... maybe they can comment about that?

I've got an A-Class in our lab, and have tested it with Mac and Windows clients, seeing really good speed. I haven't been able to test with video or with a good number of clients yet. I'm hoping to do that in the next few weeks.

It's field proven AND proprietary? That makes it sound like it's been used before, but this is a brand new product?

Those links shed less light on it than what Aaron has shared. We are technical people here at XSanity, looking for some technical insight into how VTrakFS works, and what it looks like to administrate it in our environments. We read kb articles, not press releases.

The inner workings of our filesystems are important to us in this community. Can you send an engineer to us to shed some light?

Please give Promise a break. Nobody should be surprised when a company wants to control its message, especially for an ambilious new product.

And I personally vouch that Victor is a great engineer and a credit to Promise.

I am excited for the possibilities of VtrakFS, but would never dream of buying into it without knowing what's under the hood.
