I figure since I _don't_ receive royalties, I can plug the book.

The Xsan Quick-Reference Guide is a compendium of handy information, processes and guidelines to set up an Xsan system. It is one of the standard texts we use in the Xsan for Pro Video class. It was written by my co-teacher Adam Green and myself.

You can now purchase the book direct from Peachpit (and at a discount) at:

I read this book on the plane coming back from NAB. It is excellent and contains some great information for anyone new to Xsan.

All of the setup examples in the book are related to a fully populated 4.6TB Xserve RAID. Many of the examples show each side of the RAID being setup as 1 LUN, however with the 2TB LUN limit for Xsan, this will not work! Only by setting it up with 6 drives and a hot spare will your LUN be under the 2TB limit and be able to be used with Xsan.

That's increadibly misleading for those of us who are new to this stuff. :(

Not quite. Xsan does work with LUNs over 2 TB. However, Xsan will use only the first 2 TB of each LUN. You don't need to use fewer disks, but you can.

Again, It won't break the SAN to have larger LUNs.
