SANLink w/ mac mini MDCs- can I daisy chain display?

Loki's picture

Hello-

I'm about to replace my aging XServe MDCs with Mac Minis and SANLinks. Since my only display output options are thunderbolt or hdmi, and since converting hdmi to vga for my equally ancient KVM is not easily accomplished, I'm wondering if I can just daisychain through the SANLink?

thanks,

DK

You can throw a mini display port to DVI on the second port of the sanlink but it is not analog video. probably time to upgrade your KVM too.

KVM, you really need this? What about remote desktop? SSH?

Great for 99% of the time, but then it's not so prudent if you're a remote I.T. team as you no longer have LOM. KVM will save your life for the need to re-image and so on.

I know it seems primitive, but we had a facility generator test last year where I needed to come in and shut everything down for 30 minutes at about 4 am. When I got onsite, I discovered that the person running the campus backbone switches had shut his equipment off the night before because he was too lazy to come in at 4am. This left me with no way to connect to my systems except via KVM, and I was damn glad I had it.

I always use the rolling cart with monitor keyboard etc and just attach to back of machine in rack. You usually see these rolling around datacenters. It is too much work and takes up time and space for KVM.
