Is this simply not possible or am I doing something wrong? We use the Command F Find function on a regular basis with AFP shared volumes on Servers but when we try the same function on an AFP shared XSAN volume, we get no information. I have been shown some Terminal find functions in another forum, but for my average user this is not the way to go. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

We are running 10.4.7 with XSAN 1.3 on PowerMac G5 Servers and Clients

Ok, here are some options, although Spotlight is not supported for a SAN volume "mdutil" can be used to manage the metadata stores used by Spotlight

1. Open your terminal
2. Type sudo -s
3. Type mdutil -i on /Volumes/"Name of Volume"
4. Then mdutil -s /Volumes/"Name of Volume"

Have you tried these commands? They will work on an HFS+ volume, sure. But Spotlight depends on fs-level notifications when files are created or modified. And Xsan filesystems don't have those, to my knowledge. So even though you may be able to create an index, it won't remain updated.

I could be wrong, too.

Yes I have Wink

But it's true, you have to do it everytime you mount the SAN/AFP Volume in the client though.

perhaps a little patience is in store until spotlight server comes along...my guess is that somehow it will become possible via this method.
