I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with lmdd, but it's a great tool for benchmarking streaming performance on an Xsan (or other filesystem). I've written a brief introduction to lmdd if you'd like to check it out.
If you want to give it a shot but don't want to spend the time compiling it, I do have a build for 10.5 Intel machines. Let me know if you're interested.

| Sure. Here's the lmdd executable. It definitely only works on Intel and it probably only works in 10.5. It's very easy to compile it for another OS X version or architecture if you have the developer tools. Just get the source and follow the instructions inside. |
