Hello Chaps
Long time no post.
We are in process of trying to integrate some new Mac Pros into our Xsan 1.4.2 environment. Of course Apple only ships these boxes with 10.6 these days.
My questions to the wider xsan community are:
1. Can i 'downgrade' the current 2.66 Ghz Quadcore boxes to run 10.5 (and therefore install xsan 1.4.2) This post claims apple will sell you the DVD set you need...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2331877&tstart=15
2. Or can i install 1.4.2 on snow leopard (everything i read says no way no day...but i thought i'd ask to see if anyway has been there before i start throwing cash i don't have at this!)
Basically, we are in the position of having primarily PPC hardware in an Xsan 1.4.2 environment....as the requirements for FCP and other software lock us out of PPC hardware, we are required to buy new (or at the very least 2nd hand) intel boxes with less and less likely hood of getting 10.5. 1.4.2 on them!
Anyway, i'd love to hear what others think about this and what their 'solutions' are (apart from saving like crazy to get all new hardware!)
look forward to having a robust discussion about this with you all!
ciao

| the right thing to do is upgrade your san but you dont have to. you can run 10.5.8 on those mac pros. i think 10.5.7 added support for that model. anyway good luck |

thnx Abstractrude.
I have a migration plan, to move to Xsan 2.2 / intel etc...but this is a $$$ issue and is planned for 12-18 months away.
In the current scenario, i just need to add (well replace) 2 G5 clients on my existing SAN... so i am hoping i don't need to upgrade the whole box and dice when i just need to replace a 'client'.
Your comments give me hope that i will be able to get 10.5 on this box... just trying to get as much info on this scenario before i spend the money on the boxes and find I CAN'T put them on the SAN!
thnx for your info!

Running 10.5.8. Also i recommend buying a retail disc, stay away from those apple restore discs. |

thnx for the info Abstractrude
Apple and our preferred resellers have been awesome with helping us with this issue and we are collating all of the info and trying to come up with a workable solution until we can enter the shiny new world of Xsan 2.
At this stage, we have the possibility to buy some 2nd hand boxes or try the 4,1 Mac pros you have.... we'll see how we go!
once again, thnx for sharing your experience!
