| what are the minimum requirements for a metadata LUN? For example, can it be composed of a RAID 1 set composed of 2 drives? We are setting up an XSAN using a single XSERVE RAID and are trying to maximize the drives available for Data LUNS. On the other hand is it possible to use a smaller fibre based RAID device (noon-Apple) and incorporate into the SAN as the metadata storage? |

| just format the LUNs for both metadata and data (mixed). since you only have one RAID (with two LUNs). |

| It was my understanding that mixing metadata and data on the same LUN is a bad idea. |

Well, its not really a bad idea. You can set 1 lun to have both metadata and data, but would really affect performance.
If you have just one xserve raid, i suggest you create 2 seperate arrays on one raid controller, it is possible but would also reduce performance. 1 array with just 2 hard disk would be your metadata on a raid 1 and the rest will be set to raid 5. and on the other raid controller, you can have it as a data lun.
all in all, you have 3 luns which seperates your metadata and data. |
