| Leave it to Quantum to make a StorNext head look like it came out of an elephant's arse. |

All negative comments here.
It looks interesting but useless. Whoever developed pricing on the unit was on drugs, I have heard MSRP is $75k. I'm just not seeing where the value is on this piece for XSAN users. The trend in the industry has been to make things cheaper, this is definitely not an example of that.
Sorry to be negative. There are other, cheaper, MDC solutions. I can tell you positively my next MDC will not cost $75k. Any why's it so big? What's up with 6U of space?
Am I wrong? I'm curious to hear what others think of the price point and the four cubic foot form factor. |

Maybe I am the one on drugs, but I don't think the price is so bad, at least for larger installs. The 10 SN licenses would make my Linux-based render farm, well, cheap. And the security of a single vendor for hardware/software support is something we would pay a premium for.
The trouble I see is that NAS solutions such as Isilon are still much less hassle. But sometimes you just need a SAN. _________________ Aaron Freimark

I'm at Advanced StorNext FS training at Quantum this week, and what is at the back of the room? An M330 for us to play with! So nice of them.
The boxes are typical 2U Dell servers, storage is 2.5" 24-drive LSI FC JBOD.
Any thing else I can answer? |

Our man on the street.
How many FC ports? What speed?
What is the interconnect with the MD drive array?
Is it limited to X client licences?

Is it just me or is this almost double the price of an ActiveSAN which is basically the same thing.
I just quoted out a full ActiveSAN / Interpool solution with mostly Xsan clients, one StorNext client and 48TB of storage and it was barely 15k more than just this headunit alone!
Since I needed the one single StorNext Client, I had to go with the Unlimited ActiveSAN which provides unlimited StorNext Clients as well!
Plus the fact that Lion comes with Xsan client built in for free next month...
I'm going with on drugs for the pricing. |

| Remember that standard StorNext (not StorNext FX, which is for Xsan) client node costs are very pricey... That's why Aaron is saying it's not a bad value. |

Right but the ActiveSAN comes with full StorNext (not FX) Clients in the unlimited version, and Xsan licenses don't count against even the 10 or 20 license versions.
I don't get it... unless i'm missing something |

| No no no! ActiveSAN comes with the _capability_ of hosting an unlimited amount of StorNext clients. The individual StorNext client licenses are still more money! |

Answers to the M330 questions that Aaron had...
How many FC ports? What speed?
2, 8Gbps ports in a dual-channel Qlogic card, per server.
What is the interconnect with the MD drive array?
SAS! LSI SAS card in each server connects directly to the JBOD. If you think about it, this is ok, since after failover, the surviving MDC takes control of the metadata LUN arbitration block, so there's no risk of overwrite.
Is it limited to X client licences?
10 to start, upgrade for more. Let's remember, in StorNext 4.0 land, there is no less than 12 licensing paths for their systems. |

We were briefed on this by Quantum a couple weeks ago. The client cap is for StorNext clients, not Xsan. You can connect unlimited Xsan seats to this kit. The pricing is compelling in the context of StorNext for Unix clusters, but it is a joke in the context of Xsan and even ActiveSAN.

Odd, we were told one fiber port to the RAID, one to the fabric, per MDC... Your info is probably accurate (given you are in the room with one), I'm just surprised we were given incorrect info.

Really? Unlimited client StorNext licenses? Are you sure it isn't just that you can connect an unlimited number of StorNext seats you must purchase separately?

remember guys, the world that StyorNext hails from is one where you have to bid pricing everything, I'd expect to cut 50% off that price.
