|

Hi,
I am having problems adding Lion clients to an existing XSAN.
I can add the new computer in XSAN admin and everything seems to be working correctly. However when it comes to assigning the serial number XSAN Admin either crashes or displays the error message "failed to assign serial number on computer xxxxx".
The server is running Leopard, XSAN 2.2.1.
I have managed to support Lion clients in the past however these have been Snow Leopard computers upgraded to Lion.
Please help!!

You don't add Lion clients to existing Xsans. You upgrade your Xsan to Lion or you only add Snow Leopard clients. |

| Funny thing, I was just talking to someone about this. Yeah, it doesn't work. Controllers have to be newer than, or equal to the newest client for both the OS and the Xsan version. |

| Actually it does work. You just have to use a system running lion server to administer the San and add the serial info to the lion client. I've got test system running 10.7.2 as a client on an Xsan running 2.2.1. Works fine. Does require a serial number, btw. |

I would be very careful doing this. You're in unsupported territory here.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3755
Summary
In some situations, you can use clients and metadata controllers with different versions of Xsan in the same SAN. In all cases, the versions of Xsan and Mac OS X on the metadata controller must the same as, or later than, the latest versions on a client. |

Exactly, you have to use a system running lion to administer (i.e. metadata contoller).
When I said it doesn't work, I meant it doesn't work with a Leopard controller and a Lion client. Thats not to say you can't make it work, but I'd be careful since it is very unsupported. |

An outright given... I've come across clients not sticking to this (rogue updates et al...) and Apple have shrugged them off fairly quickly. |

Eagerly clicked this as i've got a similar issue - only to find Chrome believe this site to be a Malware! Admins - can you check?
So we had 10.6.8 MDCs and due to a new FCP machine being added to the Xsan, we chose to upgrade the MDCs to Lion... seriously, how hard can it be???
Anyhoo... 2 days later...
i've finally got the 1 server at least upgraded (or rather erased and freshly installed). So it has Lion 10.7 with all the server add on bits (the download from the App Store, and the Server tools). The xsan is ticking along under control of the old MDC1 still running 10.6.
The plan is/was to get on MDC on to lion, fail over to it, and then upgrade the 2nd.
Currently i'm trying to add the newly upgraded server to the Xsan via the 10.6 MDC, but it either crashes out (i get a re-open choice) or during the add, i get a yellow warning triangle, and a message telling me that it can't add apply the serial number - Xsan Admin is telling me that the it' an unlimited one.
Not sure what to do now... I'm stuck.
Anyone? |

No malware detected.
This procedure allowed me to connect my Lion clients to my XSAN 2.2 OS X 10.6.8 MDC.
THANKS! |

| I have gone through these steps and now my Lion client thinks it is part of the XSAN, but when I try to add the machine through the XSAN admin, I still get the error that it cannot apply the serial number. Also when I enable the XSAN on the Lion machine it is unable to find the volumes. Any help is appreicated. |

Just to make sure, your controllers are Lion as well? The general rule is that the controllers must be the same or newer version of OS and Xsan as all the clients. Which means that you can't add a Lion client to a SAN with Snow Leopard MDCs.
If this is the case, then the serial number error is likely due to the fact that Lion Machines are automatically licensed for Xsan, and thus don't get a serial number applied (which older versions of Xsan get upset at). |

Thank you for the reply. In my case the controllers are Snow Leopard and the client that needs to be added is Lion. I know its not smart to do this and its not supported but the higher ups said to get it done.
I was able to successfully add the Lion client to my Snow Leopard managed XSan following the steps from the link. The problem I was having after following the steps with just some cable mis-management. Thanks for the links. |
