The Server app UI for DNS is quite odd but it looks like that's all we got now. I'm so confident in this Xsan that I'm puttin' it into production tomorrow. Just like the old one.
FYI for those having issues with remote access in mountain lion - fix permissions. I had this happen on two systems already. |

your going production tomorrow? if so please share experiences. some interesting bits for kytped (edge)

Xsan – cvadmin, cvlabel, cvversions, etc are now stored in /System/Library/Filesystems/acfs.fs/Contents/bin/ and Xsan has its own entry in the Server app. Despite hearing people question its future, I’ve never seen as many questions flying around about how to do things with Xsan than I do now. Storage sales are up, monkey chatter on the web is up, deployments are being booked and Xsan looks here to stay. The Server app only really shows you a status of things, but the Xsan Admin app is now embedded in the Server app and available through the Server app Tools directory. |

This behavior is the modern equivalent to enabling Xsan in Server Setup before. As Server is now a full-fledged app, there is no server config in the OS setup steps, so they moved here. |

Holding strong in production. I'm not sure what you folks expect. We've been editing, capturing and it all works.
I found the new xsan admin guide which is now under Other Services -> Xsan

Apple has just a bunch of losers working there. I'd like to see the next version of Xsan which will hopefully include that new StoreNext feature that works with tape libraries out of the box and might eliminate the need to purchase HSM. |

Hmmm... Apple may not have hundreds of Xsan engineers, but they are working on it. As we clearly see the results.
As for HSM, it is very expensive, and while nice, you can replicate its functionality with a license of Achiware PresSTORE. Easily. |

| yeah im not sure people understand what HSM is. apple will never do HSM and they shouldn't. If you need HSM and your looking at free software solutions you need a reality check. |

StorNext storage manager is a complicated beast. Its also a big money maker for Quantum. Why would Quantum license that capability to Apple to give away for free?
Xsan has essentially become everything Apple wants it to be. Its a plug-n-play storage solution for big data. A long haul from Xsan 1.4, its definitely capable of being setup (in a basic fashion) by a non-technical person.
Xsan 3 just changes from the deprecated Stornext 3.5 codebase to the newer StorNext 4 code. Its all backend stuff. I don't see apple adding more features (other than glommy gui type features) to Xsan and, frankly, I hope they don't. The things that I need to do with StorNext are not possible with a purely Xsan system. And I trust that if Apple added some of the features that I use they'd nerf them as always. If you want heavier lifting from your SAN upgrade to StorNext. To reiterate abstractrude, if you're looking for HSM type functionality from a free product then you're doing it wrong. |
