Hi all,

I was just setting up a small system that we will use at a studio outside of our main facility and it is my first lion server system. I'm having an issue with posix permission creation in the finder.

I was trying to set up a base image for the computers and placed a launchd-user.conf file with umask 002 in /etc like we would for our snow leopard images in order to default writes to read/write for all users' main group (in this case staff).

If you create a new directory with the Finder (ie - right-click on the desktop or in the shared storage and create new folder), the posix permissions for the group are read-only instead of read-write. Whereas, in snowleopard or prior, finder directory creation would respect the umask setting.

It seems that directory and file creation from other apps (FCP, TextEdit, whatever) respect the umask and give the correct permissions be it on a file or directory creation. It's annoying that the finder doesn't since users like to create new folders with the finder. Since this environment will be shared between windows and osx clients, I'd like to make the macs behave in posix permission world.

I have been searching on line and haven't found an answer to how to fix this in lion. This isn't caused by xsan, but will definitely affect xsan workflows in lion if you rely on umasks.

Please let me know if you have encountered any solution to this.

Thanks,
Keith

This is a lion thing.

You can experiment with changing the Finders umask but I haven't had much luck with that either:

defaults write com.apple.finder umask -int 2

PM me and I can provide you with an AppleScript app that makes new folders with the correct permissions.

We can only hope that a future update will correct this.

10.7.4 did in fact correct this issue.
