| The problem with any version of Media Composer on Xsan/StorNext has been when you try to use it with multiple editors. Avid puts all its data at the root of any hard drive in a folder called Avid MediaFiles typically. Within that folder is numbered folders that contain media and database files. Without unity the database files get clobbered and you spend all day rebuilding indexes instead of editing. |

what other solutions are there for Avid multi editor workflow?
I've heard of Edit share but from what I know they are more of Avid unity competitor than a server solution.
anybody?

| AVID MC works well with multiple editors using Flavoursys Strawberry and StorNext SAN. |

| I saw strawberry briefly at NAB. Does it work by managing symlinks? Or is it more complicated than that? |

On the file system level, Strawberry works with hard links. The Strawberry server manages the Avid/Adobe/FCP bin and project locking. A database and a client application are taking care of the user and project organisation. |

Sorry, didn't see your question earlier.
Stawberry presents the SAN volume to Avid MC as a network share that is has control over, but it actually writes media to the SAN, not the network share.
When you change projects, then it can take that project folder and present it as if it was the entire SAN volume, instead of a subfolder.
In essence you get multiple editors and multiple projects sharing the SAN volume. |

I know this thread is several months old but I was curious where the interest levels were these days with users wanting to use Avid MC on Apple Xsan/Quantum StorNext? Please feel free to PM me for additional details.
