What alternatives will y'all be exploring post-FCServer?

| I doubt that there is any alternative out there right now but I trust that 3rd party developers will quickly create additional automation and media asset management options for Final Cut Pro X. Quite a few things like custom metadata and a proxy workflow is already in FCP-X and that's just the beginning. |

CATdv.
http://www.squarebox.co.uk/
There are both individual licenses and a server client setup. It's a great program.
Of course with the new FCP- X all bets are off. If you're talking about interaction with FCP 7.0 CATdv is a great choice. Don't know enough about "X" to make a recommend. Probably doesn't work now, since XML as we know it is dead in FCP-X.

I talked to someone extremely knowledgeable in the FCPX development world. The plugin architecture will solve almost all the issues. I think once apple gets some stuff fixed and we see plugins, fcpx is gonna be a great tool. 12-24 months.
but then again all bets are off |

I wasn't too impressed the first time I checked out CatDV, maybe its worth another look now. I had 3 Final Cut Server implementations in the pipe for this year! Oh dear!
Last thing remaining to be axed is XSan by the looks of it. |

| All bets are off till there is a FCPX successor to the old XML interchange. CatDV, everything else, relies on XML to read project data. Supposedly one is coming, but no known timeline. |

You can still deploy them (maybe..) as the software is EOL but many people will still support it - you just havn't got a chance in hell of anyone fixing it's current pitfalls nor anyone helping should a Java update b0rk it.

I would hope (...) that's a little while yet, mainly as there is a lot of money tied up in the Xsan deployments around the world, and I suspect Apple quite enjoy their recurring Xsan APP revenue for each and every seat. |

Or rather, the fact that they are including Xsan in every single copy of Lion at no additional cost. Why do that if you are killing it? Seems to me they want more people to use it, and perhaps there is even some neato Thunderbolt stuff coming that will make Xsan even more affordable. |

Still deploy FCserver? You're kidding right?
Who would pay for that. It's throwing good money after bad. |

FCSvr for FCP6/7 Workflows, still a valid(good) option...
but it's just a matter of time for something to just slide before the sun. |

Weirdly enough (no sarcasm there) two out of my 3 clients are going ahead with the installation saying that for the size of their production, they are not going to move away from FCP7 any time within the next 2 years at least. And the workflows available answer a pressing need they have.
Who woulda thought! |

Reposting this from Matthew Stamos @ CreativeCOW.net. This will make a lot of folks happy. Easy migration from FCsvr to CatDV.

I read this yesterday on a french blog. I wonder if CATDV will support all the workflows correctly as I understand the feature set is not exactly the same...any experienced users out there? |

Just head of Strawberry - from Flavorsys:
http://www.flavoursys.com/
Does an interesting file level hiding/unhiding of media on shared storage. Works with FCP, Avid and others.
I guess they are working with Rorke Data too. |
