Can someone walk me through this?

This technique is not supported by Apple. In addition, we encountered USB stability issues when running Snow Leopard on the Mid 2011 Mac minis.

If you'd still like to force installation of the Thunderbolt Software Update for Snow Leopard, here is how to do it:

Before you do anything: Make sure you have a backup of the computers for which you plan to install the update in case things go wrong.

1) You will need a copy of Xcode installed. For Snow Leopard, Xcode 3.2 is still available. Registration as an Apple Developer (free) is required. For Lion, Xcode 4.3.1 can be obtained for free through the Mac App Store.

2) Download this software update: Thunderbolt Software Update (Snow Leopard) v1.0

3) Launch the Flat Package Editor application. For Xcode 3.2, this is installed at /Developer/Applications/Utilities/PackageMaker.app/Contents/Resources/. In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder... to navigate to this location. For Xcode 4.3.1, PackageMaker.app is available as a separate download for Apple Developers.

4) Open the ThunderboltSoftwareUpdate.pkg file in the Flat Package Editor application. Find the Payload file and drag it to the Desktop. This is a compressed archive containing all the files to be installed as part of the update.

5) Copy the Payload file to the /Users/Shared folder on the computer you want to install the update. Then run the following command in Terminal as an administrator:

Code:
sudo ditto -x -z -V /Users/Shared/Payload /

The same technique can be used for applying Thunderbolt Software Update 1.1 (Snow Leopard), but I did not attempt it since we had already moved on to Lion.

That is a great way to install the Thunderbolt update on Snow Leopard. I have used the Promise Sanlink DeskLink... that is a fun category, DeskLink! Smile Anyway, when will there be a Ethernet version of the Sanlink? I could really use one of those, preferably 10Gb, but multiple ported 1Gb would be ok I guess.

Jumping back on this and latency......

Have you noticed that an upgrade to Lion fixed the issue?
