It makes me wonder, if by attaching the new display to the new Mac Mini, will this create an extra Ethernet port? or will it disable the internal one? Same for the MacBook series.... And will this add an ethernet port to the MacBook Air? |

It's like a MacBook dock. Plug in one cable and get your USB, FireWire, Display, and Ethernet at once. When you are done, those cables stay plugged in and you take the laptop with you. _________________ Aaron Freimark

But for the sake of those seeking to make the new minis into MDCs, I guess that this 2nd ethernet port will fill the bill. And I doubt it will disable the existing Ethernet port in a mini or Mac Book Pro.
However, the whole point of the mini was to have a low-profile, rack mountable MDC (for small systems). Having a gargantuan display as part of the networking solution is not what we want long term.
And now that Sonnet has quietly killed all evidence of a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adaptor it had originally announced at NAB (go check, it's nowhere to be seen on their site), and Promise supposedly delaying shipment of SANLink until late fall, this is really a pipe dream at present. |

Where are you hearing that Promise delayed their SANLink? I just talked to them yesterday and they told me shipping in August.
As for rack mounting as an MDC, why not use internal gigabit ethernet for meta data network, SANLink for fibre, and Apple's USB to ethernet for other internet connection if wireless isn't an option. Sure it's only 100Mb, but if you are using the server as an MDC, that should be more than enough for most setups.
I plan on testing this setup out as soon as I can purchase the SANLink in August (as long as it truly isn't delayed). |

There's no delay that isn't true. |

I could not find it on the front page, but it is still mentioned here: http://www.sonnettech.com/news/nab2011/
We should be testing some Mac mini servers as soon as the Thunderbolt Fibre Channel adapter is available. The Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter is not as critical since we can make do with a USB adapter to start testing.
One issue I see is how to rack mount all the adapters. Most Mac mini rack mounts seem to have just enough room for two computers. |

MattG has a really good point. How can we keep talking about a product that hasn't shipped. Also who makes the HBA? Is it ATTO or LSI in there? I don't know if you guys have noticed but lots of manufactures have difficulty getting the thunderbolt products to market. Sonnet seems to be another case of marketing maybe promising something that engineering was unable to deliever. I got this from Matrox the other day in an e-mail.
| Quote: | | Despite our best efforts to deliver on the original schedule, Thunderbolt support for Matrox MXO2 devices has been delayed. We are working closely in partnership with Apple and Intel to create the best solution for our customers and now anticipate shipment in September. We are extending our special offer on new purchases of Thunderbolt enabled Matrox MXO2 devices until September 30, 2011. |
Food for thought |
