Hi there!

Our infrastucture now: One MediaComposer and AVID Liquid Editing Station and nearly 20x500GB HDDs in Trays with circa 20-30 project-folders on each of them. We carry the HDDs from one workstation to the other one and back and forth all day long...

Now we're planning to buy two completely new FinalCut workstations, one Xserve and a 16-disc-storage-array (not sure yet - perhaps a Sixraid or Active Storage XRAID ES).

The Xserve will run Final Cut Server for asset management and automated encoding-jobs. Both FCS-workstations will store their data on one big shared volume on the storage array (attached directly with Fibre Channel).

Now my question: Do we need to run Xsan here? I read that FC-Server blocks Projects for other users when someone opened it. What are the advantages with XSan?

Thanks in advance from Germany!

Without XSan it is not possible to create one big shared volume that is accessible on both the Edit stations and the Final Cut Server.

The whole purpose of XSan is that you create a Storage Area Network..
In order to have the storage capacity available to all server's or client's in your SAN network.

If you create a single volume on your storage set and connect them to the XServe or the Mac Pro's directly via Fibre, you will have to define on what MacPro or XServe the volume will be mounted. It is not possible without XSan to mount the one big volume on more than one server/computer. (Direct Attached Storage)

If you plan to use Xsan in order to save the hassle to have to haul those disks and get Final Cut Server running properly. I would advise to get an expert in to help you design the proper setup for this kind of implementation.

Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thank you very much for your answer! That helped me a lot.

Finding an expert is not that easy. We already asked 5 professional videosystem companies to make us an offering that is not overpriced, but contains _everything_ we need to run such a system. The offerings went from 10k to 100k EUR, still missing important components. Most of those "specialists" told us total bull***t ("You need at least 4 full equipped XServes to manage your SAN). Another "professional" "forgot" some of the most important components (for example the FinalCut Software!!!).

So we decided to list at first all components we'll need and give this precise list to one of this pros. That's why I'm upgrading my knowledge of SAN-infrastructures now.

I'm an independent Apple Certified Consultant, perhaps I could assist you in getting the kit list complete. And be of assistance in the implementation fase aswell.

I'm located in the Netherlands and going to Germany is not really a problem. But perhaps a personal exhange of ideas is more appropriate.

I've sent you a personal message containing my personal response.

Greetings
