My setup:
2 - MDC's
1 - windows backup server
2 - mac pro clients

array 1:
14 500GB drives RAID 5, 2 acting as hotspares

array 1:
7 500GB drives RAID 5, 1 acting as hotspare
3 750GB drives for metadata, 1 acting as hot spare

6.82TB usable space
3.43 TB used space

All systems are running 10.5.7, with the exception of the backup server, which is win2k3.

We purchased the new final cut studio and xsan/ADIC licenses to go along with it.

So, I am looking to upgrade our volumes. I have never run a defrag or consistency check on the volume, so I will have to start with that. The upgrade process is very straight forward, however the time table isnt.

How long does a typical consistency check take?

How long does a typical defrag take?

How long should I anticipate for the volume upgrade to take?

I am located in San Francisco, but our san is in Detroit. I will probably take a trip to Detroit for the upgrade. I need to determine how long the upgrade will take, including the defrag and consistency checks. I do not plan on moving to 10.6 for the servers, but I will probably swap the workstations with newer hardware.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
frank

I posted about the same question earlier.
Consistency check not very long. 5 to 15 minutes.
Defrag: not recommended. snfsdefrag only defrag files not free space, so after a defrag you end up with more freespace fragmentation. Not very god for new file. If you can (like suggest to me) backup and restore. Only serious way to defrag.

How long the upgrade is what i am looking after.

ciao

metfoo,

Are your MDC Servers Intel?

Also, out of curiosity...
You'll need to update OS on servers to 10.5.8v1.1 for XSAN 2.2

If you are replacing the clients with new hardware running 10.6 out of the box, are you planning on trying to "back-rev" them to 10.5.8 for compatibility?

all boxes are intel. I will bring each one to 10.5.8 to ensure 2.2 compatibility. The clients will be fresh 10.6 installs. I dont want to have to upgrade them at a later date.

I tried a test using a bunch of firewire 800 drives today. The system seemed to hang at login so i had to hard power it. afterwards it came back online without any issues.

Clients shouldn't have a higher OS than the MDCs...

Best Practices.

Please post results.
