My company is in the process of installing a new studio and one of our contractors wants to use Facilis instead of Xserve RAIDs. Has anyone here used Facilis? Any comments, positive or negative, are appreciated.

Unless I am mistaken Facilis make SAN solutions, not FC storage so I don't know how well this would work with xsan?

The Facilis boxes have fiber ports, so in theory, they could appear as a LUN, however I wouldn't chance it. Also, I don't believe you can buy their boxes without licenses so it would be very expensive.

Most of these types of storage systems are based on a box that is basically a PC running a linux variant that will share the built-in drives over a fiber channel HBA (of course that's a simplified version of the story) Compellent, Facilis and a host of others are doing this.

Xsan and other systems like to see plain ol' raids generally, meaning one's with no virtualized layer other than the controller. Just drives and a controller like an Xserve RAID.

Apple has to roll out some new storage soon. (one would hope) Maybe you should wait for NAB to see what they do.

Are you sure they aren't trying to switch you to a Facilis SAN instead of xsan?

Apple will not have a booth at NAB this year.

You are correct, and if you think that there will be no Apple hardware at the show and no Apple employees there, I would think that naive. I expect, for instance that "Promise" will have quite a presence there this year, as well as our friends at AJA, Blackmagic, etc... Apple will be participating in all of those areas and I'm sure they will have a ton of reps on the floor, even though there's no true "booth".

Also, Apple doesn't seem to care, but most other companies use NAB as a place to roll out their new stuff. Perhaps we'll even seethe long-awaited "FCP Server" by then.

Purchasing this time of year is a crap-shoot. That's all. peace and welcome XSAN 2!

I have heard questions about integrating facilis and xsan... but as far as I have worked with them they are independent and mutually exclusive san solutions. In theory you might be able to mount a facilis volume and an xsan volume on two different ports... that would be an interesting experiment.
