Lion Server: $49.99 from the App Store (includes Xsan Admin)

Server for everyone! Apple has announced pricing for Lion Server: $49.99 from the App Store. This is on top of the $29.99 for Lion.

And did you catch this nugget? "Lion also supports industry-standard multipathing and failover, so Xsan can be used with a variety of Fibre Channel RAID storage arrays." I guess Promise has been unblessed.

Xsan (Client) Built Into Lion

There it is, in the public announcement at WWDC: "Xsan built in." Sure, it was small type on a list of many features, but it was there.

I'll post more info if available (outside of NDA of course).

What do you think of that 97% price drop?

Update: From the updated What's new in Lion page:

Built into Lion
The Xsan file system is built into OS X Lion, allowing any Mac with appropriate connectivity to access an Xsan volume.

Case insensitivity option
For improved performance and simplicity, you can now create case-insensitive Xsan volumes. These volumes act like traditional HFS+ volumes and do not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase characters in filenames.

New preference pane
A new Xsan pane in System Preferences makes it easier to manage, mount, and unmount Xsan volumes.

Industry-standard multipathing
Lion supports the Asymmetric Logical Unit Access (ALUA) standard for multipathing and failover. This allows Xsan to be used with a variety of Fibre Channel RAID storage arrays.

Xserves still in stock at Tekserve

We don't usually have this sort of blatant promotion on Xsanity, but Tekserve is my employer, and from time to time I've got to feed the meter. Also, you may have noticed how Xserves are getting increasingly difficult to find. And not insignificantly, Tekserve and Xserve rhyme quite well.

Lucky for you, Tekserve has at this very moment a generous stock of Quad-core and Octo-core Xserves. I took this photo this morning, and it doesn't show them all. These are new and with full Apple warranty. Browse our selection on the web or call (212) 929-3645. We will ship anywhere in the USA.

Archiware Releases PresSTORE 4.2

PresSTORE 4.2 was released yesterday, with a long list of new features:

  1. Backup: Fool proof backup rotation
Extended security requires backup rotation. In case rotation is not performed by the user, backup now runs on any of the designated tapes. As a result the current backup is always available.
  2. Backup and Archive: Restore selection
The restore selection offers the option to collect multiple directories and files for a single restore process in a floating window.
  3. Archive: Metadata import
Selected metadata can be imported automatically by a script while archiving.
  4. GUI: Improved usability and information in the browser interface
The job monitor now displays information about levels of backup and synchronize jobs. Storage administration is simplified by listing mounted volumes and logged-in users in the file picker.
  5. Storage management: New job log for volumes
All job operations can now be viewed for each volume separately..
  6. Backup2Go: Automatic software update for workstations
After PresSTORE has been updated on the sever, workstations will be updated automatically.
  7. Backup2Go: Network filter
The new network filter allows for single workstations or groups to be backed up only when within a selected network.
  8. Backup2Go: Display of used disk space
The workstation list now displays used disk space per workstation
  9. Volume management: Using barcode as volume name
PresSTORE can now automatically use tape barcodes as volume names for labeling.

You can download the latest version here.

Final Cut Server
Transmogrifier 1b Available for Final Cut Server

We're proud to announce that the Transmogrifier open source project has now moved into 1.0b. It is available at http://transmogrifier.sourceforge.net.

There are a lot of new options and very robust new documentation available at:
http://transmogrifier.sourceforge.net/docs/cli/transmogrifier.py.html.

In addition to the Transmogrifier codebase, we're also adding fcsArchiver.py. fcsArchiver allows for deep integration between Final Cut Server and PresSTORE. To see the full documentation for fcsArchiver, see http://transmogrifier.sourceforge.net/docs/cli/fcsArchiver.py.html.

There is also a smaller new script called productionBuilder that creates productions in Final Cut Server:
http://transmogrifier.sourceforge.net/docs/cli/productionBuilder.py.html.

Transmogrier now provides integration between Final Cut Server, BrightCove, YouTube, PresSTORE and any XML-based system.

The entire team at 318 hopes you enjoy!
