AFP Issues?

mamunoz's picture

Alright so I have my setup with around 30 fiber connected machines to this Xsan. This Xsan is NOT sharing over AFP, fiber only. I have spotlight enabled. Nobody is on either AD or OD as there is no need its just dumb permissions in this environment so everything is POSIX on the SAN. This week one of my users who does not have a fiber connection learned that he could connect to one of the Macs that does have a fiber connection then use their credentials to share files. At that point they then mounted the SAN share on their desktop over AFP. Essentially what appears to be twice but could be coincidental, shortly after that user mounted the SAN over AFP through a fiber connected client the volume became unstable and running cvfsck was required as well as rebooting the systems. Obviously I have since disabled file sharing on all the fiber hosts but wanted to see if this users actions could cause such issues or is it that my file system is just getting wonky and I should probably start looking into rebuilding?

Please hire someone to help you. Also setup directory services. You are confused about how Xsan works.

Confused about how Xsan works? Please don't confuse my lack of participation on these forums for lack of knowledge on the subjects at hand. Perhaps I haven't explained something for you to adequately understand the nature of my post. Either way I was under the impression these forums where established to bring users together and not as a means of pointing people to consultants.apple.com.

If you have no interest in helping it is quite easy to simply not respond.

As mentioned directory services are not needed in my environment as all users have the same UID and same username hence why permissions are of no concern in this environment. I brought it up purely as background info to the situation.

Please post relevant logs. Thanks.

Alright unfortunately the logs from the first incident cycled and I don't have them but I do have the ones from Friday.

Some more background I have 2 Volumes Capture and BFD. BFD is the volume with the issues. Capture's meta volume are SCSI disks directly attached to the MDC. That volume has very low need and priority thus the explanation for no ability for a failover MDC.

Going to split this in 2 posts as its acting funny with more than 2 code fields.

It appears it doesn't like the length of that cvlog here is what was at the bottom of that prior post.

Internet is 10.0.2.x Metadata is 10.0.5.x
Controller is running 10.7.5 all clients are on 10.7.4 as of now.
We have 3 QLogic 5600's
Dothill RAID with 4 x 4GB FC. This has 5 LUNs being shared. 24 drives total. 5 drives RAID 5 for the 4 that serve as the data LUNs for Capture. 1 2 drive mirrored LUN for metadata LUN on BFD. We have a custom Sun Comstar box with 4x 4GB Qlogic Fiber card serving out 24 SSD's over 4 LUNs 5 drives per LUN 1 spare for each LUN. Lastly 2 mirrored SSD's on a Highpoint card that the OS sees as a SCSI LUN that is the meta LUN for Capture. DNS resolves properly forward and reverse from clients and from MDC.

The volumes were created using 10.7.4 and within the last 2 or so months just the MDC was updated to 10.7.5.

Not sure exactly what DNS information you are looking for precisely but I have a FQDN the MDC is zuul.mydomain.com that resolves to my VLAN for internet traffic. I have no DNS entries for my metadata VLAN.

The clients are all iMacs using Thunderbolt to FC converters.

Currently everything is in one zone but I just found an article on here about setting it up differently that I may explore this weekend.

I think that is everything you are looking for if I am missing something let me know and I appreciate the help.

As mentioned directory services are not needed in my environment as all users have the same UID and same username hence why permissions are of no concern in this environment. I brought it up purely as background info to the situation./quoteThe problem is that the moment a process slaps an ACL on a file, you suddenly are using UUIDs and SIDs. While the user account on each machine may have the same name and UID, it will have a different (unique) UUID and SID.

You are correct, though, that this configuration has nothing to do with this problem.
